Experimenting with your photography

It's fun to mix things up sometimes.

I mix up my style of photography and ways of editing, all the time. I guess it may be that I've not quite found 'my style' yet, but I actually love changing things up every so often. If you were scroll down my Instagram feed for long enough, you'll probably notice that my 'theme' and way of editing has changed numerous times over the past 2 years, and that's because I love to experiment.

At the minute, I'm going through a low-vibrance stage, but before this, my photo's were a little brighter with a hint of a purple tint. I admitted my love for buildings and architecture in my post last week, and this is why I've started to take more photographs of just this, too. I figured that it may not be a 'typical blogger' thing to photograph, but I love them so I'm incorporating more of these into my feed, also.

I'm a massive believer that in order to be successful at something, you have to be consistent. But at the same time, I also think that your style should evolve with you. I'm not the same person that I was 2 years ago, and therefore I hope that neither is my photography. My blog and my social media are quite the extension of me, I think, so I love that these reflect me and my life at that point in time.

I'm constantly inspired by other bloggers and other Instagram accounts, and I guess it's these that motivate me to change things up sometimes. Imagery and photography are quite a major part of blogging now, and I love it when I discover new bloggers who do incredible things with their camera and they always excite me to get home and try something new.

Life would be pretty boring if we didn't experiment, don't you think?

  1. My feed changes ALL the time. I try keep it to that moody look (that I managed to master towards the end of 2016) and keep it that way as much as I can. God knows what I'll do when Spring comes round, HAHA!

    1. Bee, you're feed is incredible! I feel like you definitely mastered your style last year, it looks great and really suits, you! xx

  2. It may not be a "bloggy" thing to photograph but it's DIFFERENT and its YOU! I've actually found my account really bumped up when I started posting architecture. I like shooting buildings, I'm good at it, and now it's part of my online identity :)

I am all for experimenting as well. I haven't quite found my editing style yet. Everytime I think I've nailed it, I change my mind and go in a totally different direction haha (see my IG for proof!)

We'll get there though :) xx

    1. I hadn't thought of this! Haha I do that, too. I find a style that I think I might finally settle on, and then I accidentally do something else and I'm like 'oh, okay, well we're going this way with it now then..'

Katy, your instagram is one of my favourites, so whatever you're doing, keep doing it! :) xx

  3. I totally get this feeling. I'm trying to keep my instagram feed consistent but at the moment I just love experimenting with things, and I think I'll keep doing that until I find something I'm totally happy with. Also I don't want all the photos to look the same, I see instagram feeds made of entirely flatlays and I don't look into them with as much detail as I do instagram feed that have a mix of different kinds of photography. Your feed looks amazing so keep doing you!

    1. It's actually making me really reassured that it's not just me that feels a bit 'unsettled' with my photography! I think experimenting is all part of the fun, right?

And yes, I totally know what you mean about Instagram accounts that are just made up of one style of shot, it actually puts me off a little!

Thank you, Johanna. I think you should keep doing you, too!

  4. I am LOVING your feed at the mo Sophie. I think you integrate new styles and themes seamlessly, change and refreshing your creativity is so important for growth. I am in a bit of a rut with my Instagram at the moment, I can seem to get myself into a theme or consistent posting pattern which is frustrating. I think it is mostly to do with the fact I leave for work in darkness and come home in darkness which is a pain! Come at me spring! Immy x

    1. Thank you, Immy! You're smashing it at the minute too! Haha oh my goodness, the whole leaving for work and coming home in the dark thing! It's such a nightmare isn't it? I feel like my Insta is always a lot more planned during Winter, because I have to take all the photo's at the weekend :( xx

  5. I bloody love this! I always mix up my editing styles but am going for bright and colourful at the moment and really enjoying it :) Your photography is so beautiful.. Definitely Instagram goals! xx

    1. Thanks Jessie - I always love your blog and Insta - I feel like you can never go wrong with bright & colourful. It looks fab! :) xx

  6. I also have the most difficult time sticking to one style. I get bored of it and always feel the need to find something better. It bugs me that I'm not as consistent, but at the same time, I think experimenting is always good. Also, I would say taking photos of buildings is completely fine and should be encouraged as a blogger, especially those that share their fashion sense. Many times fashion itself is inspired by the built environment around us, so don't limit yourself on what you capture and share. Maybe I'm biased as an architectural designer, but architecture inspires everyone far more than they think it does :)

Looking forward to following more of your posts!

    1. Yes, I get bored if I stick to one style for too long, too! Your comment about fashion being inspired by the built environment is actually so, so true. I've never even thought about that before but you're totally right!

Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment, Fariha! :) xx

  7. I totally agree - experimentation is fantastic! Taking a risk, too, really pays off :D

    1. Thank you, Ellie. Risks really do pay off, sometimes! xx

  8. I completely agree! I still struggle to have my own insta style but I'm sure I'll manage soon ahah x
